Emily Dickinson

The Heart asks Pleasure - first -
And then - Excuse from Pain -
And then - those little Anodynes -
That deaden suffering.

And then - to go to sleep -
And then - if it should be
The will of it’s Inquisitor
The Liberty to die.

Il cuore prima chiede gioia,
poi assenza di dolore,
poi quegli scialbi anodini
che attenuano il soffrire,
poi chiede il sonno, e infine,
se tanto consentisse
il suo tremendo Giudice,
libertà di morire.
